Japanese Yuzen Box: Four-Piece Set of Modular Silkscreen Prints Mounted on Wooden Box Frames

This is our Japanese Yuzen Box Wall Art Set of Modular Silkscreen Prints

We proudly offer this Japanese Yuzen Box wall art set. It includes four modular silkscreen prints mounted on handmade wooden box frames. Each module measures 20″ x 29″. Total area: 2,320 sq. in. Colors: midnight blue, burnt orange, rose pink, and sea green. The source piece consisted of four 3″ x 6″ panels. These originally were part of a six-sided cardboard origami box with a pop-in base. The box was open at the top and decorated with continuous multicolored strip of Japanese origami (yuzen) paper.

What is Yuzen Paper?

Japanese yuzen paper is decorative paper generally consisting of highly repetitive patterns. This traditional washi paper uses fibers from the paper mulberry (kōzo) bush or similar fibrous plant sources. Japanese artists and craftsmen apply the silk-screened color patterns by hand, one layer at a time. This requires considerable time as each color must be fully dry before the next color is applied. The final layer is usually gold or silver metallic overlay.

More About the Image Source

The source for this pattern was a vintage hexagonal Japanese origami box dating back at least to the 1960s. New boxes of this type are rare today and are likely to be found only in specialty shops in Tokyo. The lack of repetition in the pattern extending the full 18″ of the strip marks it as of vintage date. The images displayed here show the completed set mounted on wooden box frames as well as the original multicolored source piece.
