What is a Kilim?

A kilim is a flat tapestry-woven carpet or rug that traditionally come from countries of the former Persian Empire. These include Iran, Azerbaijan, the Balkans, and the Turkic countries of Central Asia. Like pile carpets, kilims have date from ancient times. Their production involves tightly interweaving the warp and weft strands of the weave to produce a flat surface with no pile. Weft strands that carry the visible design and color are almost always wool. Hidden warp strands can be either wool or cotton. The warp strands are only visible at the ends, where they emerge as the fringe. This fringe is usually tied in bunches to ensure against loosening or unraveling of the weave. They are much less durable than rugs that have a pile, so it’s not surprising that few of great age remain. Those considered antique tend to date from the late 19th century.

A Contemporary Take on a Traditional Tribal Design

The concept behind this Anatolian Kilim wall art set was to bring a contemporary look to a traditional tribal textile pattern. So, to begin with, we reduced the original multicolored palette with the bold use of black, white, and red. Secondly, by using a modular approach, we broke up the overall pattern while at the same time retaining the visual flow of the original textile. Thus, the result is a visually striking statement that is well-suited for commercial offices and meeting rooms, health care facilities, small businesses, or modern homes with large wall space.
